CARRIS

2019

For Carris, a company dedicated to urban public transport, we developed QRIS, an innovative digital ticketing solution.

Named QRIS, combining QR Code and Carris, this solution designed by MAKE IT enabled the purchase of tickets through the Carris mobile app, seamlessly integrating with the MB Way payment platform, providing an effortless and efficient ticket purchase and validation experience. Validation would be carried out by a unique device that reads QR codes, delivering instant visual feedback to users through light animations to improve usability and user interaction.

The effectiveness and suitability of QRIS were tested in a pilot project involving 150 users and 20 devices. This trial was a critical step in assessing the solution's real-world applicability and user satisfaction.

Our dedication to excellence in design and functionality was evident. Not only did we meet the demands of safety and durability, but we also captured the historical essence of Lisbon's trams, incorporating their characteristic features into the design of the equipment.

Through our project management skills we delivered more than 20 fully functional devices in a period of just tree months. This swift and efficient execution from concept to implementation was a testament to our agile methodology and customer-focused approach.

For the first time, Carris trialled a prototype so advanced that it resembled the final product. This prototype not only resembled a final product in terms of design and functionality, but was also perfectly aligned with the company's branding, emphasising the integration of technology and user experience (UX).

ABOUT THE PROJECT

01.

Challenge

Focused on the user experience in a day to day traveling, Carris wanted to dematerialize the physical transportation ticket. Replacing it to a digital one that can be managed on a Smart Phone. Besides the mobile application, a new physical device must be made to validate the digital tickets inside the trams.

03.

Design and Engineering

Hardware and firmware development

We develop custom hardware and firmware solutions to fit the specific needs of the product.

Industrial design
Design and built with peoples in mind our solution is a result of an agile and creative process that allowed our client to have a product in hands in 3 months.

Digital production
We cost-effectively produced 20+ units with market-ready quality without the cost of tooling or injection molding.

02.

Solution

We took inspiration from the Caris iconic tram model and built a physical product with the user experience as a priority. Focused on usability, we implemented the QR Code scanner technology that allows the product to work even under the hardest light conditions.

04.

Proof of Concept

Developing a prototype in a short space of time makes it possible to validate several critical facets of the project:

Technological validation
Testing and proving that the proposed technology is viable and works as required in a real-world scenario.

User Experience
Evaluate how users interact with the product, obtaining valuable feedback that can contribute to adjustments and improvements.

Decision Support
Provide the client team with concrete data and a tangible demonstration of the proposed solution, facilitating informed decisions about future development.

Risk Mitigation
Identify and resolve potential challenges or problems before development of the final product begins, saving time and resources.

Carris can try out the solution in a real environment, offering valuable insights and allowing the client to visualise how the final solution might work and interact with end users.
